Micaiah’s LCS Experience | #WeAreLakefield

Micaiah ’25 with her fellow Grade 9 Grade Representatives.

This week, we sat down with one of our Grade 9 Grade Representatives, Micaiah ’25 to learn more about her experience at Lakefield College School. This interview is part of a new series, called “We Are Lakefield” — inspired by a phrase you’ll often hear our students and Head of School (Ms. Kee) say with pride (followed by “We got this.”) when community spirit and strength are employed to power through a uniquely challenging time, event, or activity. In this series, you’ll hear personal reflections from our students that provide valuable insight into what it means to be a part of the LCS community.

Micaiah’s Journey to LCS

“I first found out about LCS from a friend. I asked them what schools they were looking at attending and they mentioned LCS. I had never heard of Lakefield before but it was such a lucky coincidence that I decided to research the school on the last day I could sign up for an interview! The amazing admissions associate here, Ms. Felicia Neil, welcomed me to Lakefield and immediately after, I got a feel for the campus. And I knew this was the school for me. One thing that especially drew my attention was the variety of things I could participate in here, such as different arts, sports, and clubs while also pursuing a good education.”

Making a Residence a Home

“Adjusting to a new place usually has its difficulties but for me, it was a short process and I think a huge part of that was because of our Grads (Editor’s Note: At LCS, we affectionately refer to our Grade 12 students as “Grads”). I truly believe that the Grads are such a huge part of what makes the [student] houses feel like homes. And my house, Grove House, has some of the best Grads on campus. They have supported me through crises, stressful times, and have taught me so much. They are people who give me a good laugh and I am so thankful that I get to spend their last year at this school getting to know and love them. I genuinely feel like LCS is my home away from home and that I’ve met some of the best people in my life here.

In all, the people at LCS are so supportive. They all play so many different roles to make sure that I succeed. Everyone here is so caring and loving. They only want to see you learn and grow into the best person you can be.”

Learning Beyond the Classroom

“One of my favourite programs that I’ve been a part of during my LCS experience is Grove Records. It is a songwriting program where we work with a professional music producer and songwriter, Rob Wells, to create and produce our own music. This program has given me such a huge opportunity to take my passion for music and songwriting to the next level and eventually share my songs with the world!”

Looking Ahead to Life After The Grove

“In my short time at LCS, I’ve found that there are a lot of ways you can practice leadership. One example is by leading one or more of the student-led language clubs. Another is by being a part of THRIVE. Another example is by running for a Grade Rep (Grade Representative) position, which I have the privilege of being as a leader in this community. My experience as one of the four grade representatives for my grade has helped me develop my leadership skills and many others that I can take with me after, hopefully, four years here, such as independence, appreciation of different ideas, listening to others, and so many more. It trains me to be a person who sees and learns from all of the ranging and diverse perspectives and ideas of everyone!”

#WeAreLakefield

“I would recommend this school to people whose values align with the values we have here. These values include development of the whole person, individuality, learning, joy, an inclusive, caring community, trust, service, and environmental responsibility. Also, to people who like the outdoors because when they say ‘outdoors everyday’ they aren’t joking. But all in all, I seriously mean it when I say, this place offers you invaluable experiences I will remember for a lifetime.”
